Meanwhile, the Old Fall River Road, which was the first road in the Rocky Mountain National Park, gives you a chance to see the park from the perspective of some of its earliest visitors. If you want to see more of the park and take in some spectacular vistas, the Trail Ridge Road scenic drive runs more than 12,000 feet high giving visitors sweeping mountain views over the Rockies and is the highest paved road in the United States. The trails start from short, family-friendly jaunts to visit high alpine lakes to a challenging, seven-mile climb up to Estes Cone, one of the most recognizable mountains in the southeastern section of the park. Located just an hour and a half from Denver, the magnificent Rocky Mountain National Park covers more than 415 square miles of mountain terrain complete with 355 miles of hiking trails, 50 different lakes and streams, and more than 100 peaks that soar over 11,000 feet. This is also a great option if you want to try some of Colorado’s famous beer and need to leave the car at home. The area surrounding Denver has a great public transport system and you can visit many of the small towns via public transport.
